A Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to book accommodation after getting there, but once I got there, a big convention was happening and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking towards a gaming venue, believing I might spend the evening in an establishment operating through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more folks who show such kindness.

I must have looked confused as a woman spotted me loitering in the city and wondered if everything was alright. I shared my predicament and immediately she said I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and safe to spend the night.

Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she took being a woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of kindness. I hope karma has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. The world needs more people with such compassion.
