A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
