RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
