Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

This event follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
