Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams reversed course, revealing he now plans to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to energize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this election is,” Adams remarked.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
