Strong cold-season winds brought walls down upon fragile tents sheltering Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than 4 individuals. This tragedy underscores the dangerous situation that continue after more than 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides No Respite from Harsh Elements

While a truce has been active from last fall, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient shelter required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on this week that the dead were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to experience death in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, three people of a one family — 72-year-old a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot high wall fell on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. At least 5 additional people were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began clearing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have decreased' during the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million individuals has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and storms away while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season. This marks the third cold season since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when militants attacked Israeli territory and murdered around 1,200 people and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.
