We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
