Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
